Disability Insurance

About Disability Insurance

Disability insurance was created to protect you if you can no longer work.  If you are injured and, for some reason, can no longer perform the physical responsibilities of your job, disability coverage will pay you for the period you are out of work.  Typically, a disability policy allows you to pick the length of time you must wait before the policy starts to pay you.  It is expected to see anywhere from 30 days to 180 days to wait for the policy to pay.  Disability policies can vary depending on how long they pay you when you can’t work.  Some pay you for five years, ten years, or even until retirement age.  Premiums for Disability coverage vary greatly based on your profession, health, income, policy length, and the waiting period.

Typically, it’s a good idea to purchase disability insurance if you don’t have savings to cover your daily expenses until retirement.  It’s also a good idea to buy disability coverage if your company doesn’t offer a policy for you or the provided company policy doesn’t cover enough of your income.
